Start with a Color Palette

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same white shirt and jeans combo. Instead, choose a color palette with 2-3 complementary colors. Think soft neutrals with pops of color or warm autumn tones for fall sessions. Here are some of my favorite color palettes that I've found photograph beautifully!

💡 Pro Tip: Look at your home decor. If you’re hanging these photos on the wall, you’ll want the colors to complement your space!

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Matching outfits can look outdated, but coordinating colors and styles add a polished look to your photos. For example, Mom could wear a flowy dress in mustard yellow, Dad could wear a gray sweater and dark jeans, and the kids could rock outfits with hints of both colors.

Consider the Location

Your outfit choices should make sense for the setting.

Woodsy or outdoor sessions: Think earth tones, plaids, or cozy textures.

Urban or downtown sessions: Opt for trendy, modern styles with bold pops of color.

Indoor sessions: Keep it clean and simple with solid colors and minimal patterns.

Layers and Textures Are Your Friends

Layers like cardigans, scarves, or denim jackets add depth to your photos. Mixing textures like knit sweaters, corduroy, or lace can also add visual interest without being overwhelming.

Skip the Logos and Graphics

Unless you want your family photo to say “Just Do It” forever, avoid clothing with large logos, characters, or graphics. They can be distracting and make your photos feel dated.

Comfort Is Key

Kids (and let’s be real, adults too) will be happier and more cooperative if they’re comfortable. Avoid anything too tight, scratchy, or restrictive.

Dress for the Weather

If you’re shooting in the fall or winter, make sure everyone has stylish coats, gloves, or boots that match the vibe.

Your family session is all about showcasing your unique personalities and the love you share. Remember these are just suggestions, I want you to wear whatever you feel comfortable and confident in! When you feel good in your outfits, it shows in the photos.

So have fun with it, don’t stress too much, and get ready to create some beautiful memories!
